Ride of the Week: 2009 Madshus Nanosonic skate skis The Owner: Sierra Nordic, Truckee
What type of skis are these?
They are the top-of-the-line versatile hard-pack racing ski.
What makes them the top-of-the-line?
They’re lighter and the base is a higher quality so the wax lasts longer.
How do they make the ski different for hard-packed snow?
There’s an extra layer of carbon fiber at the tip and tail.
What do you think of the skis?
I’m impressed, I had a chance to test them on a frozen-hard morning at Royal Gorge last year. The Norwegians set out to make a hard-pack ski and no one knows more about skiing than they do.
How important is it to wax a pair of skis like these?
More important than people think, you have to wax the skis a lot more than Alpine (skis) because you are going uphill. But it’s also simpler than people think. The first goal is to protect them and the second is to make them fast.
Have people been out skiing yet?
They’ve been out already skiing at Hawk’s Peak, didn’t even hit any rocks.
When did you open the store in Truckee?
We opened Nov. 1 but we’re still trying to get ready.
What other type of skis do you sell here?
We sell classic, skate and touring/backcountry skis but nothing with cables.
