Road-rage murder defendant out of Placer jail on bail

Staff reportsTimothy Brooks, the man charged with murdering Robert Ash following a road-rage incident last summer, was freed again on bail Tuesday. In January a Placer County Superior Court judge sent Brooks back to jail for the second time since the August stabbing incident and added another $250,000 to Brooks’ original quarter-million dollar bail amount after prosecutors accused Brooks of misrepresenting his travel abroad. On Tuesday, defense attorneys told Judge Richard Couzens that they had made a mistake about their client’s recent international travel. Couzens responded by rescinding the additional $250,000 bail amount, freeing Brooks from jail until his trial later this month.Deputy District Attorney Chris Cattran has painted Brooks as a flight risk since his wife, Susanne Brooks, is a German national.Brooks, who was living in Truckee at the time of the August incident, has been accused of the stabbing death of Ash, 47, of Newcastle, Calif., outside Syd’s Bagelry in Tahoe City. The stabbing occurred 30 minutes after Ash allegedly cut off Brooks and his wife in his car on Highway 89 as they were driving near Squaw Valley, according to eyewitness accounts.Brooks’ next hearing is set for Feb. 24 at 8:30 a.m. in Auburn. During that meeting, the attorneys and judge will discuss the details of the trial, set to begin Feb. 27.- Sun News Service reporter Kara Fox contributed to this report.
