San Pablo man killed in holiday traffic accident

DOUG MATTSON, Sun News Service

A San Pablo man died, and five people were injured Thanksgiving morning after their pickup crashed into an Interstate 80 bridge, skidded, and rolled, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Xan Saechao, 31, died after a westbound Toyota pickup he was in crashed east of Eagle Lakes Road, CHP dispatcher Shawn Mann said.

The victim, who was wearing a seat belt, was in the cab with five other passengers.

Transported to Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee were driver San Saechao, no age available, of San Pablo; Kae Saevang, 33, of San Pablo; Muey Saechao, 26, of Richmond; and Ton Saechao, 25, of Richmond.

Ton Saechao was in fair condition Thursday night; the others were treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

A fifth passenger, who was ejected from the pickup, Nai Saechao, 23, of San Pablo, was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center and listed in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

She was the only person not wearing a seat belt.

Mann said the pickup was moving at 50 to 60 mph while passing over the bridge, which crosses the South Yuba River and becomes coated with ice this time of year.

Donner Summit Fire Department crews were already near the scene after responding to a two-vehicle crash that caused minor injuries.
