‘Sand up for ‘Staches’ comedy night in Truckee to support men’s health

TRUCKEE, Calif. — On Dec. 6 at 7 p.m., “Stand Up for ‘Staches,” will feature three Reno comedians with Rick D’Elia headlining at Mellow Fellow of Truckee.

The show will raise funds for Movember, a mustache-centric nonprofit that supports testicular and prostate cancer research as well as mental health campaigns. Movember supports the Movember Foundation, the Livestrong Foundation, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Movember utilizes the month of November as a celebration of the mustache for their primary fundraising vehicle. They encourage men (and women) to grow a mustache (or celebrate mustaches) and make a fundraising page to benefit multiple projects.

With a focus on physical health (testicular and prostate cancer) and mental health (depression, anxiety, psychosis, and schizophrenia), Movember supports foundations that research better methods for testing and treatment as well as foundations that support men already suffering from one of the aforementioned issues.

For example, the Prostate Cancer Foundation focuses on research while the Livestrong Foundation strives to address the unmet needs of cancer survivors.

Rick D’Elia has performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Comedy Central, and Showtime. In addition to writing two books (“How to Talk to a Yankee Fan” and “Bathroom Bits”), Rick currently directs, writes, and co-hosts on a late night comedy show for the CW network in northern Nevada and California, Half Hour Happy Hour. He’s a 20-year veteran of stand up comedy and entertains with a quick wit, improvisation, and observational humor.

Ethan Pickett, Sean Pearson, and Matt Wiegand are regulars on the open mic scene in Reno, Nev. and have each won the 3rd Street Bar weekly comedy competition. Wiegand also hosts the Great Basin weekly comedy competition.

Mark Manning, a Kings Beach resident, will host.

All four comedians have opened at one or multiple of the following venues: Pioneer Underground, Catch a Rising Star at the Silver Legacy, and the Crystal Bay Casino.
