Searchers to look along I-80 near Truckee for missing Nevada grandmother

CARSON CITY, Nev. and#8212; Nevada investigators are certain a man suspected in the disappearance of his grandmother drove through the Truckee area on his way to Sacramento just before she was discovered missing.

Peggy Herlacher, 73, of Silver Springs, Nev., has not been seen or heard from since July 22. She was reported missing on July 24 and the following day, Herlacherand#8217;s grandson, James Masterson, 22, was stopped in Sacramento driving his missing grandmotherand#8217;s car and allegedly in possession of her jewelry and credit cards.

Authorities in Sacramento also allege Masterson was in possession of heroin. He remains in the Sacramento County Jail awaiting trial on charges of possession of stolen property and drugs. Masterson has declined to comment to investigators on his grandmotherand#8217;s whereabouts.

Lyon County, Nev., Sheriffand#8217;s Lt. Brian Veil said Masterson moved in with his grandmother a week before her disappearance and was not familiar with the area. But investigators are now certain Masterson drove into California via Interstate 80.

and#8220;We now know he went from Silver Springs to Fernley then Interstate 80 to Sacramento and Interstate 99 down to Modesto,and#8221; said Veil, declining to comment further. and#8220;He was in the Truckee area. Thereand#8217;s no doubt. We do know that.and#8221;

Search and Rescue crews looking for clues in Herlacherand#8217;s disappearance have come up empty in searches around Herlacherand#8217;s home, the highway to Fernley and from Verdi to the state line, said Veil.

He said their best bet at breaking the case is if someone comes forward who may have spotted Herlacherand#8217;s vehicle.

Anyone who may have seen a 2000 white Chevy Cavalier driving or stopped along Interstate 80 between July 22 and 25 should call 775-577-5096. The non-descript vehicle had a Jack in the Box antenna topper and a towel in the back window.

Herlacher is described as having gray hair and brown eyes. She stands 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs approximately 140 pounds. She has health problems and requires daily medication.

Masterson is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 140 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes and is heavily tattooed.
