Sewer main is punctured near Truckee River

Workers responded to a punctured a 33-inch main sewer line along the Truckee River outside of Tahoe City on Monday, but the high water along the Truckee River kept sewage from leaking out of the pipe, officials said.

“Because the groundwater is so high in the area, no sewage is leaving the pipe,” said Marcia Beals, assistant general manager of the Tahoe-Truckee Sanitation Agency.

The pipe is the main line that transports sewage from the North Shore state line and the North Shore, as well as sewage from the West Shore, out of the Tahoe Basin along the Truckee River to the treatment plant in Truckee. The line is gravity-fed and not under pressure, Beals said. It was punctured at the Caltrans maintenance yard outside of Tahoe City, leaving a 6-inch hole in the top and bottom of the pipe.

Workers sealed the pipe Monday afternoon by plugging it with another pipe. The line is being monitored closely, Beals said.

“We have somebody watching it constantly,” she said.

The type of construction, the equipment being used and the identity of the contractor who was working around the line that was broken was not available as of press time Monday.

Beals did say the workers called the underground alert number to check if there were any utility pipes in the area.

The Tahoe-Truckee Sanitation Agency plans to meet on Wednesday and determine a permanent fix to the pipe break, she said.
