The Nevada County Sheriff” Office has a new $50,000 remote-operated underwater vehicle to aid in evidence and body recovery in area lakes, Sheriff Keith Royal announced today.

The 30-pound device is equipped with sonar that detects objects up to 300 feet in every direction, a camera and spear-like grabbing arm in the front.

The features are operated with a joystick and other controls on a remote panel. The device can travel as deep as 600 feet under water.

The high-tech vehicle was purchased with a federal grant from the Office of Homeland Security, Royal said.
