Sierra Sun publisher accepts new post
Longtime Sierra Sun publisher and editor Peter Kostes has accepted a position as publisher of The Record-Courier in Gardnerville, Nev., a twice weekly newspaper.
Eric Henry, general manager of the Tahoe World for the past two years, has been promoted to publisher of both newspapers. In his new role, Henry will be responsible for total operations of the Tahoe World and Sierra Sun.
“I’ve had a great nine years at the Sierra Sun and I’m going to miss the community and the many friendships I’ve made,” Kostes said. “Most of all I’ll miss the dedicated and talented staff I’ve had the honor of working with.”
The announcements were made Tuesday to the staffs of the two newspapers by Arne Hoel, president of Mount Rose Publishing Co., the family owned company with which the World, Sun and Record-Courier are affiliated.
“We will miss Peter Kostes in Truckee as his many years of dedication to the Sun and the community cannot easily be duplicated. We are fortunate to be able to replace Peter with Eric Henry, who has significant community newspaper background. We are confident Eric will maintain the quality community journalism at the Sun which Truckee has become accustomed to,” Hoel said.
Kostes has been publisher and editor of the Sierra Sun for the past two years. He became editor of the Sun in 1990. He later served as general manager and editor for three years before assuming the publisher’s role in 1997.
During his nine years at the paper, the Sun consistently received honors for editorial and advertising excellence from state and national press associations.
Henry has been general manager of the Tahoe World since July 1998. He joined the newspaper as editor in 1994.
“I’m excited about these expanded responsibilities and opportunities,” Henry said. “The World and Sun are both excellent community newspapers with bright, talented staffs. We will continue to work hard to improve the papers.”
Henry came to Lake Tahoe from Kansas in 1994. As editor, Henry led a redesign of the newspaper and has helped guide the news staff to numerous California and Nevada awards in general excellence, community service, environmental coverage, editorial writing, spot news, photography, sports coverage and design.
The World was named the best mid-sized weekly in California two years ago. His “Oh, Henry” column has received national and state journalism awards.
“I’ve really enjoyed working with Peter for the past five years,” Henry said. “He’s done a lot of good things for the Truckee community. The Record-Courier is getting a fine publisher.”
Henry and Kostes will guide the management transition at the three newspapers in the coming weeks.
Kostes, his wife Julie and their five-year-old Labrador retriever plan to move to the Carson Valley full-time by the first of the year.
