Signs point toward Amgen Tour of California coming to Tahoe

TAHOE CITY, Calif. and#8212; It’s not a done deal, but officials appear to be getting closer to cementing Lake Tahoe as a start and finish area for the 2011 Amgen Tour of California cycling event’s first two stages.

In a Thursday interview, Andy Chapman, director of tourism for the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association, said a course has already been planned that will start somewhere on Lake Tahoe’s South Shore and then send riders around the lake for one and a half laps until they reach the finish line at either Northstar-at-Tahoe resort or at Squaw Valley USA.

Stage two, Chapman said, would start at whichever resort and#8212; Squaw or Northstar and#8212; was not selected as the finishing destination.



and#8220;We don’t want to jinx ourselves, but I’m assuming we’ll know before the end of July,and#8221; Chapman said.

Chapman said his association and other local businesses and organizations are working closely with the race directors to establish Tahoe as a race route destination.



and#8220;We’re working pretty closely with these guys, and I have a lot of confidence this is going happen,and#8221; Chapman said. and#8220;We’re still looking in pursuing the start of stage one and the start of stage two.and#8221;

The Tour of California entered its fifth year in 2010, and typically includes elite athletes of the cycling world like Lance Armstrong and Levi Leipheimer. Michael Rogers won this year’s tour.
