Skier hits tree, dies at Northstar

A 20-year-old San Jose man died Tuesday at Northstar-at-Tahoe after he apparently ran into a tree.

The man, whose name and cause of death have not been released, was skiing with friends on Martis Run at about 2 p.m. when the accident occurred. He was not wearing a helmet, according to Northstar spokeswoman Nicole Belt.

Responding ski patrollers began resuscitation efforts immediately and transported the man off the mountain. He was later pronounced dead by the Placer County Coroner.

The death marks the sixth of the season at North Lake Tahoe ski resorts, including three at Northstar-at-Tahoe, one of which was a heart attack. Nationwide, an average of 39 skiing deaths occur each season, according to the National Ski Areas Association.
