Soccer playoffs: Truckee girls advance to second round; North Tahoe stuns Fernley; Lady Lakers knocked out of tourney

Update 4:30 p.m.: The North Tahoe boys’ soccer team stunned No. 1 seed Fernley this afternoon, scoring three late goals to claim a 3-2 victory.

The Vaqueros entered the postseason undefeated, and held a 2-0 lead late in the opening round of the Class 3A Northern Region Soccer Championship, before the Lakers came storming back.

North Tahoe will now face North Valleys tomorrow at noon in a semifinals matchup. The Lakers dropped both regular season games against the Panthers.

The Class 3A Northern Region Soccer Championships got underway today at Churchill County High School, bringing the league’s best boys and girls’ teams to the pitch for an eight-team tournament.

The three-time defending state champion Truckee girls rolled through the first round of play earlier today, taking an 8-0 win against Yerington.

The Wolverines will play the winner of White Pine and Incline tomorrow in Fallon at noon.

The North Tahoe girls’ team also qualified for the tournament, but had their season come to an end this afternoon after being topped 2-1 by Spring Creek. The Lakers finished the regular season with an 8-7-6 record.

On the boys’ side, North Tahoe’s game against Fernley began at 1 p.m.
