Some fear land division in Sutter Buttes could lead to housing

YUBA CITY, Calif. (AP) ” Conservationists are worried that development may be coming to the Sutter Buttes, a tiny mountain range formed by volcanic activity in the Sacramento Valley.

Nearby Yuba City is booming, and the Sutter County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will consider a landowner’s proposal to divide nearly 900 acres along the range’s southern edge.

The owner says he wants to carve his land up so he can give it to his children and grandchildren.

But environmentalists worry it could encourage other landowners to do the same and become the first step toward building new homes there a decade or two from now.
