South Shore bank robbery, bomb threat forces evacuation

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE (AP) ” A bomb squad Monday detonated a box left in a supermarket by a robber who said it contained an explosive device, forcing the evacuation of the market, police said.

The robber threatened an employee of a Wells Fargo bank branch in the Raley’s supermarket near the California-Nevada line and fled with an undisclosed amount of money Monday afternoon, South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Martin Hale said.

The supermarket was evacuated after the robber fled on foot and left behind the box, Hale said.

A bomb squad from the neighboring Douglas County, Nev., sheriff’s department arrived and rendered the box harmless but have not yet determined whether the alleged bomb was real or fake, police said.

The robbery occurred as tens of thousands of people crowded into the South Lake Tahoe area to celebrate the New Year.
