All-League, All-State baseball | Wolverines, Lakers honored

Sylas Wright / Sierra SunTruckee senior center fielder Tanner Churich was voted by coaches to both the All-State and All-League first team.

A number of Truckee and North Tahoe players were honored with selections to the Mount Rose Baseball All-Conference team, with four of them receiving All-State recognition.

The All-Conference selections (also called All-League) were voted on by the Mount Rose League coaches.

Truckee seniors James DePew and Tanner Churich and junior teammate Steven Baker all were voted to the All-League first team. DePew received the honor as a pitcher, Churich as an outfielder and Baker as an infielder.

DePew and Churich were then voted to the 3A All-State first team during the state tournament as Baker was placed on the second team. North Tahoe sophomore Colin Spencer received 2A All-State honorable mention.

The All-State awards were voted on by the coaches with teams in the state championship tournament, at which Truckee head coach Mike Ellis said he had to argue with fervor against other coaches to get his players recognized.

In All-League voting, North Tahoe junior shortstop Connor Altick was selected to the second team as a utility player and designated hitter. Meanwhile, two Wolverines were voted to the second team, with Ryan Smith receiving the honor as an infielder and Jackson Rohlf as an outfielder.

A total of four Truckee players received honorable mention recognition and#8212; Erik Holmer and Andy McKechnie in the outfield, Aaron Pado at utility/DH, and Tony Buranzon at pitcher. Two North Tahoe players made honorable mention and#8212; Brian Tidd as an infielder and Spencer as a pitcher.

Dennis Morelli of Sparks was voted All-League MVP, while Sparks skipper Greg Vasko received Coach of the Year honors.

Boulder City’s Jack LaMarca was named All-State MVP and his coach, Bill Strachan, was Coach of the Year.
