Barhke takes second in Japan, keeps lead
February 27, 2003
Shannon Barhke maintained her World Cup mogul points lead with a second place moguls finish in Madarao, Japan, on Sunday. Austrian Margarita Marbler edged out the Tahoe City native, 26.86 points to 26.35. Barhke’s rival Kari Traa, of Norway, took third at 26.10.
Barhke’s lead, however, is slim. So slim they’re actually tied at 284 points each and only a tiebreaker rule is giving Barhke the lead with only one race left on the tour. The women’s U.S. team managed four top 10 slots.
Shelly Robertson, of Reno, was ninth at 25.12 and Laurel Shanley of Squaw Valley was 20th.
Robertson sits in 13th in the overall standings with 392, Shanley is 19th with 272 and Jessica Davis, of Tahoe City, is 37th with 20 points.
On the men’s side, South Lake Tahoe’s Travis Cabral was edged out by teammate/roommate Jeremy Bloom, of Loveland, Colo. Cabral, who’s won three times this winter, was runner-up at 27.83 behind Bloom’s 28. Luke Westerlund, of Breckenridge, Colo., made it three Americans in the top four. South Lake’s Chris Hernandez tied for 29th.
Cabral now sits in second in World Cup points standings with 548, right behind Canadian Pierre-Alexandre Rousseau’s 556.
