Cheer squad wins championship trophy

Provided to the Sun

-The Tahoe North All-Stars cheer squad brought home a first-place trophy from the annual California Bay Six Flags Marine Championships in Vallejo, Calif., on Sunday.

Taking top honors competing against more than a hundred teams from across California, the squad earned an invitation to the Jamz All-Star Nationals in the Junior Level 3 All-Star Division. The national competition will be held in Las Vegas from March 22-24.

When scoring, judges typically look for overall uniformity, showmanship, tumbling and stunting skills and choreography.

A relatively new program, the Tahoe North All-Stars team consists of 11 girls ” two of whom did not participate in the competition ” ages 6 to 12 years old. Many are experiencing cheerleading for the first time this last year.

The girls who competed in Vallejo were Andrea Rodriguez; Rebecca Berelson; Rebecca Herrington; Lucinda Nyhan; Melissa Pena; Brianna Pena; Evelyn Pena; Olga Olivas; and Wendy Olivas.

“The Tahoe North All-Stars Cheer and Dance Program is only about a year old, so to be so successful at this point is really awesome and surprising,” said head coach Crystal Schenk. “They worked so hard and really amazed everyone who has seen them during practice while competing. I’m looking forward to seeing what they can accomplish at Nationals or other future competitions.”

The Tahoe North All-Stars ” which is directed by former Ameri-Cheer Individuals Third-Place Champion and Truckee High cheerleader Rachel Berelson ” is considered both recreational and competitive cheerleading.

T.N.A.S. Cheer offers tumbling, dance and cheerleading and is designed especially for youth.

The girls have been practicing at the Glenshire Clubhouse for about an hour each Tuesday evening for the past year.

The T.N.A.S. will be having tryouts beginning the first week in November, and the team will be spending the next few months fundraising and looking for sponsors to help pay for Nationals or other competitions.
