CNISSF Nordic racing | Season concludes with snowy state championships

After racing through most of the season on thin trails under sunny skies, Nordic skiers were challenged by heavy snowfall for the CNISSF state championships at the Auburn Ski Club on Saturday.

The championship event included both classic and skate disciplines for high school racers and featured 13 schools between the high school and middle school divisions.

In high school racing, Truckee's girls and North Tahoe's boys captured state titles, while North Tahoe Middle School won both the boys and girls team championships.

Hannah Halvorsen of the Sugar Bowl Academy (SBA), who was fresh off a string of impressive results competing internationally, raced to the individual state title among high school girls. She posted a combined time of 29:28.3 between the two disciplines.

North Tahoe track and cross-country standout Quinn Lehmkuhl finished second just ahead of Mammoth's Amanda Kirkeby, recording a time of 31:39.8 to Kirkeby's 31:40.6.

Truckee's Lizzie Larkins (32:45.6) and Kyla Burrill (32:48.7) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, and were followed by North Tahoe's Tara Gallant, Truckee's Grace Bronstone, SBA's Savannah Blide and Eleanore Hamilton, and Truckee's Claire Lang-Ree rounding out the top 10.

With four skiers in the top 10, Truckee's girls took the team title with a high score of 172 points to runner-up SBA's 166. North Tahoe's girls were third with 155 points. They were trailed by South Tahoe (91), Nevada Union (79), Mammoth (50) and Colfax (49).

In high school boys racing, North Tahoe took three of the top four spots to handily claim the team championship with 234 points to runner-up Mammoth's 194. Truckee's boys were third with 180 points, followed by South Tahoe (128), SBA (114), Nevada Union (85), Colfax (34) and Incline (20).

The Lakers' Dylan Syben led the way, winning the individual title with a time of 26:01.9. Peter Carroll of SBA finished second in 26;13.0, North Tahoe's Julien Bordes was third in 26:26.1 and teammate JC Schoonmaker was fourth in 26:33.6.

Trace Calvin (26:55.5) of Mammoth placed fifth, while Truckee's Casey Jobe was sixth, Mammoth's Connor Kusumoto seventh, SBA's Skyler Mullings eighth, North Tahoe's Cam Goldstone ninth and Mammoth's Calvin Forsythe 10th.

Middle school racing

The middle school divisions were tightly contested between North Tahoe and Alder Creek.

In the girls competition, North Tahoe earned the championship with 390 points to Alder Creek's 379. Mammoth was third with 265, followed by Independent (92) and SBA (84). In boys racing, North Tahoe posted a high score of 390 points to Alder Creek's 367 and Lake Tahoe School's 334. SBA (200) was fourth, followed by Mammoth (95) and Independent (87).

Led by Sofia Sanchez's individual title, North Tahoe girls swept the top two spots and had four racers finish among the top seven. Sanchez won with a time of 15:57.2 and teammate Nina Seemann was second in 16:08.0.

Alder Creek's Kianna Mullings (17:05.3) and Frances Hamilton (17:19.3) finished third and fourth, respectively, and North Tahoe's Ella Kuzyk (17:27.1) was fifth and Kili Lehmkuhl (18:09.5) sixth. They were trailed by Mammoth's Alexia Craven, Alder Creek's Megan Flynn, Incline's Lexie Madigan and Alder Creek's Emma Purdy rounding out the top 10.

SBA's Haydn Halvorsen earned a commanding victory among middle school boys. He recorded a time of 13:26.8 to North Tahoe runner-up Nate Cutler's 14:05.5. North Tahoe's Cooper Anderson finished third in 14:09.7 and was followed by teammates Max Roske (15:01.6) and Murphy Scott (15:21.3) as North Tahoe placed five skiers in the top 10.

After Mammoth's Jared Mahler, Zach Larson led Alder Creek with a seventh-place finish, while Jacob Gramanz of North Tahoe was eighth, and Alder Creek's K.C. Larkins and Alan Tester were ninth and 10th, respectively.
