TELLURIDE, Colo. — Competing on a blanket of fresh snow, Connery Lundin of Olympic Valley earned first place in the men's ski division in a Subaru Freeride Series event at Telluride Ski Resort on Saturday.
Lundin edged out Gary Mackenzie of Alta, Wyo., by a single point, earning a two-day a score of 142.67 to Mackenzie's 141.67.
Lundin entered the finals with a commanding lead from the first day of competition, which he claimed by executing a 360 and a large backflip. He took his point lead into consideration for finals and skied a clean line with a massive cliff drop to deliver a jaw-dropping run.
"This is my first time winning a Subaru Freeride Series competition. It's overwhelming and it's taken a long time for me to do it," Lundin said. "I finally feel deserving and I couldn't be happier."
Jonathan Penfield of Pemberton, B.C., and Camila Brown of Salt Lake City won the snowboard competition, and Kaki Orr of Wilson, Wyo., placed first in the women's ski division.
Squaw Valley skier Chanc' Deschamps-Prescott, meanwhile, was recognized with the North Face Young Gun Award, which is granted to the most impressive up-and-coming athlete under 20 years old. Deschamps-Prescott skied a creative line through a technical chute in the center of Dihedral Face.
