Barcelona NorCal Soccer Club is kicking off its fall season with the 4th Annual Copa de las Sierras Labor Day Tournament at Riverview Sports Park in Truckee from Aug. 31-Sept. 3.
The Truckee/Tahoe-based club, formerly known as Sierra Mountain Soccer Club, entered into a collaboration agreement with Barcelona USA last winter and launched a revamped program in the fall season.
The 15 competitive teams, which ranged from U9-U15 boysand#8217; and girlsand#8217; teams, hit the fields in April in their new FC Barcelona-themed uniforms and a fundamentally enhanced coaching methodology emphasizing possession play, high press defense and quick strikes.
With this approach, the club enjoyed its best season ever, winning tournaments in San Francisco, Medford, Oregon, Carson City and South Lake Tahoe across all age brackets.
The cluband#8217;s 4th Annual Copa de las Sierras Labor Day Tournament to kick off the fall season attracts 50 visiting teams from Northern California and Northern Nevada and brings more than 3,000 visitors to the region for the three-day tourney.
This tournament, which serves as a major fundraiser, enables the club to provide scholarships to 28 percent of its membership, ensuring a rich soccer experience for the economically challenged players in the region. The depth of the program and financial sponsorship has provided Olympic Development Program opportunities for five members of the club in the last year. The talent exiting the club has also bolstered local high school soccer programs.
