Skiers and snowboarders raced under blue-bird skies on the second stop of the Rahlves’ Banzai Tour, the Wall Banzai, at Kirkwood on Saturday and Sunday.

As he did in the first stop at Alpine Meadows, Kyle Coxon of Utah raced to victory among men’s skiers in Sunday’s final four-person heats. Tyler Wallasch placed second and was followed by Jesse Maddex and Robert Mahre.

Coxon also won three of the four tour stops last year to capture the overall men’s ski title. With two wins this season, he’s now a lock to take on tour founder and former Olympic downhill racer Daron Rahlves in a one-run, winner-takes-all Super Final in the series finale at Sugar Bowl this Sunday.

Former World Cup moguls skier Shelly Robertson improved on her second-place finish at Alpine Meadows with a victory in the women’s ski final Sunday. Alexis Machovsky placed second, Caitlin Robinson was third and Emily Barrett fourth.

Shannon Rahlves, who won the opening event and often battles Robertson in the final, was eliminated in the round of 16.

The men’s snowboard final was not without controversy. Bobby Minghini, who won the opening tour stop, made contact with race leader Lucas Dehmlow just before the finish line while trying to pass. Both riders went down, and Dehmlow was awarded the victory and Minghini was disqualified for initiating the contact from behind.

“These are high-level athletes who have great skills, but at times in the heat of competition, wrong moves are made and that’s racing,” Daron Rahlves said on the event’s Facebook page. “RBT’s mission is to run a fair and professional event series making decisions ensuring the overall safety and fair competition for all.”

The next two riders across the finish line, regular Banzai Tour contenders Jayson Hale and Sylvain Duclos, were awarded second place and third, respectively.

In the women’s snowboard final, Audrey Hebert raced to victory ahead of Mariah Dugan, Holly Enderle and Lindsay Wexler. Hebert also won the first stop and was last year’s overall women’s snowboard winner.

The tour concludes this Saturday and Sunday with the Silver Belt Banzai at Sugar Bowl.
