Cuneo siblings shine in Tahoe Truckee first biathlon event of year
January 26, 2019
Storms may have postponed last Sunday's annual 10th Mountain Division biathlon race until the following day, but that didn't keep dozens of athletes from turning out to compete across distances of 5, 7.5 and 10 kilometers.
The race, which honors the army's famed alpine 10th Mountain Division and its handful of local men that fought in World War II, was held at Auburn Ski Club earlier in the week, marking the first local biathlon event of the year.
One of the area's top young cross-country racers, Steffen Cuneo, 17, took a dominant overall win in the pro 10-kilometer race behind the cleanest rifle performance of the day. Cuneo finished with a time of 39 minutes, 12.2 seconds.
Dan Warren, 56, was next with a time of 47:26.1, followed by Ted Hulbert, 49, with a time of 52.26.6.
Cuneo's younger sister, Annelise Cuneo, 16, captured first place in the 7.5-kilometer distance, topping runner-up Zoe Klenke, 17, by nearly three minutes with a time of 38:56.4. Rebecca Anderson, 41, was third with a time of 42:14.0.
Annelise Cuneo also had the best rifle performance of any athlete in the distance.
