Staff reports

The 20th Annual Truckee Softball Tournament drew 16 teams from as far away as Gilroy this past weekend as a fundraiser for the Truckee High softball and baseball programs.

The two-day tournament raised “a good chunk of money for both teams,” said Truckee softball coach and event organizer Mitch Brown, who estimates that about $2,000 was raised for each program.

“Shootout at Regional Park” ” as the annual tournament was named this year, Brown said ” also featured a men’s and women’s home run derby.

A total of five men’s teams, five women’s teams and six coed squads competed in tournament play.

The Bucks, based out of Reno, took the top spot in the men’s competition, while DSS of Sacramento/Gilroy placed runner-up and the Mavericks of Placerville third. Local teams Northshore Transportation and Norwegian Wood finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the women’s bracket, Superfreaks of Sacramento placed first ahead of Miller’s Munchies (Dixon/Davis) and Kudsk (Vacaville). OLU of Grass Valley and local squad Club Tahoe took fourth and fifth.
