Far West Memorial Scholarships awarded
November 25, 2015
A dozen young alpine ski racers received Far West Memorial Scholarships for the 2015-16 season.
The Sprock Memorial Scholarship was awarded to eight athletes: Sabrina Futral, JP Fourie, Max Wingard, Sinead Danagher, Sarah Auer, Maureen Lebel, Natalie Williams and AJ Hurt.
This scholarship honors Bobbie Sprock, who along with her husband Vern owned Sierra Ski Ranch from 1950-1993. Her family established this scholarship to acknowledge athletes who will be U19 and older who excel in ski racing, have strong character, demonstrate academic excellence, have a financial need and must be members in good standing with Far West Skiing.
Only one athlete received the Trabert Memorial Scholarship: Harrison Goss.
This scholarship is given in honor of Matthew Trabert, a longtime Far West racer out of Diamond Peak who moved to Team Savage later in his career. He attended the J3 Junior Olympics, and Western Region Tech Series. After retiring from the Far West division, he was the Nevada state high school champion and went on to University of Nevada, Reno.
Two athletes received the Hom Memorial Scholarship: Luke Rodarte and Maia Bickert.

Hom was from the Bay Area and grew up skiing in the Lake Tahoe area. He also worked as the ski technician with the Squaw Valley Ski Team in the early 1980s.
Tenaya Standteiner received the Dave Van Ruiten Scholarship.
Van Ruiten, the former Director of Racing at Sugar Bowl Resort, passed away on Nov. 7, 2005. He was the former Vice President of Far West Skiing, a tremendous leader and asset to junior ski racing in this region, and a highly respected professional. He was instrumental in Sugar Bowl's commitment and rise to national ski racing prominence over the past several years.
