Flys Freeride skate contest returning to Truckee
July 29, 2008
Skaters and spectators from the Tahoe area and beyond will swarm the Truckee-Donner Regional Skate Park on Saturday for the eighth annual Flys Freeride skate contest.
The competition, presented by SnowBomb and Black Flys, is free to enter and open to skaters of all ages and ability levels. Like always, helmets are required to compete.
With more event sponsors and community support than ever before, this year’s Flys Freeride will include $5,000 in cash and prizes for the competitors as well as raffle drawings throughout the day for those in attendance.
“You get free stuff and get to watch some ripping skaters,” said Dane Leonard, 26, one of the top competitors year in and year out.
Other talented local skaters vying for dough, and bragging rights, include Trevor Kekke ” who operates the Tahoe Boarding School along with Leonard ” as well as Dylan Stelck, Rafe Robinson and possibly Robby Salas, Leonard said.
There are others.

Regionally, both Leonard and SnowBomb General Manager Justin Broglio expect to see a number of skilled skateboarders from the Reno-Sparks area as well as Quincy and Mammoth Lakes.
Broglio said because of the Mountain Dew Free Flow Tour, a national amateur series that swings through the Open Ground Skate Park in Reno on Aug. 16, there may be more Northern Nevada skaters than usual. But it’s anyone’s guess who will show.
In addition to the age-division competitions ” which include 12 and under, 13-18, 19-24, 25-30, over 30 and women’s only ” there will also be a “Do or Die” contest, which is much like a game of H-O-R-S-E in basketball, and “Best Trick,” both of which award $100. Leonard said he and other top-tier skaters will enter the competitive Open Class division.
In each division skateboarders are allowed a one-minute run to squeeze in as many tricks as possible to impress the judges. One of the three judges this year is Todd Richards, a longtime professional snowboarder and now Winter X Games commentator.
The Flys Freeride skate contest will be held at the Truckee-Donner Regional Skate Park on Saturday, with registration available the day of until noon. All participants under 18 years old must have a parent present to register. Helmets are required. For more information visit http://www.snowbomb.com or contact SnowBomb at 581-0553.
