The Wolverine varsity football team traveled to Yerington last Friday night, looking for a win after an upset loss to Fernley two weeks ago.

Truckee found what they were seeking, delivering a 44-0 blow to the Lions before the clock ran out.

A scoreless first quarter was the calm before the storm, as Eric Detwiler opened the Wolverines scoring off a 47-yard pass from Kevin Schlesinger in the second quarter.

J.R. Murphy kicked in the extra point to give Truckee a 7-0 lead. In their next drive, Eric Detwiler ran the ball in to score and Murphy added one more to up the Wolverines’ lead to 14.

Dave Larson closed out the first half with an 81-yard catch and Murphy successfully booted in his third ball through the uprights.

With a solid lead after the first half, the Wolverines continued to apply pressure, scoring in the first minutes of the third quarter. Kevin Schlesinger threw a 16-yard pass to Larson for a touchdown, with Murphy collecting the extra point.

The Lions’ punter took the snap and stepped out of the end zone, resulting in a Wolverine safety.

A 28-yard run by Schlesinger and a 6-yard run by Evan Birchard closed out the scoring in the third quarter, and a scoreless fourth quarter gave the Wolverine defense their first shut-out of the season.

This win ups Truckee’s record to 4-1, with three games remaining before the playoffs.

Truckee is currently tied for first place in league standings with Spring Creek and Lowry, and will host Rite of Passage (who have a 2-4 record) this Saturday at 1:30 with JV starting at 11 a.m.

“The last two games of the season are going to be crucial,” said Head Coach Bob Shaffer. “We won’t be cruising through the end of the season before playoffs.”
