Girls qualify six for state finals

The Incline girls swim team more than held its own in the Northern Division I-A regional championships in Carson City this past Friday and Saturday.

Competing with just six swimmers in the finals, the girls placed fourth out of eight teams while all six athletes qualified for the state meet this Saturday in Las Vegas. The top four finishers in each event advanced to state.

Kate Rye led the charge with victories in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races. She won the 50 free with a time of 25.19 and the 100 free with a time of 54.62.

Ciera Winberg also qualified for state in both of her individual events, as she placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:11.36) and third in the 200 freestyle (2:19.12).

The Highlanders fared particularly well in the relays, recording state-qualifying finishes in three of the races.

The 200 medley relay squad of Winberg, Aspen Hoyle, Rye and Rachel Meyer placed third with a time of 2:15.01; the 200 freestyle team of Rachael Homola, Bridget Johnson, Winberg and Rye was fourth in 1:57.06; and the 400 freestyle team of Homola, Hoyle, Johnson and Meyer was third in 4:52.93.

Johnson also placed seventh in the 100 freestyle (1:09.15), and Hoyle was eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:29.09).

When the final results were tallied, the Incline girls had accumulated 190 points to claim fourth place. Truckee's girls won the regional title with 373 points and were followed by Fallon (232) and South Tahoe (212).

For the Incline boys, Liam Nolan-Bowers placed seventh in the 500 freestyle (6:52.19).
