Herhusky, Critz win Kinder Kup races

Heavenly Mountain Resort hosted the second of three Kinder Kup races last Sunday with nearly 60 kids participating.

Children as young as age 2 took part in the giant slalom race on World Cup run at Heavenlyand#8217;s California base area. There were several first-timers and#8212; kids who have never raced before or even seen a course and#8212; while others showed up in race suits. The annual event is designed to introduce young children, ages 6 and younger, to the Alpine sport of ski racing in a fun atmosphere.

Ryan Herhusky skied to a combined time of 1:06.85, winning both runs for the boys to take first place. Aidan Rippet came on strong with a second-place finish (1:08.13), with Aidan Pretti in third, 1:10.38; Zack Staudenmayer, fourth, 1:11.63; and Ethan Kulchin, fifth, 1:11.91. Herhusky currently stands as the overall leader going into the final race. However, Kulchin is not far behind having won Januaryand#8217;s race to go along with a fifth-place result. Both Rippet and Staudenmayer also are in the hunt, with Rippet sitting third overall (fourth- and second-place results), just a few points ahead of Staudenmayer, who has placed third and fourth.

The dayand#8217;s honors went to Kelly Critz, who posted the two fastest times of the day for all competitors. Critz won the girlsand#8217; division with a combined time of 1 minute, 4.55 seconds. Kate Kelly placed second, 1:07:63; Zoe Huml, third, 1:09.00; Wynter Probert, fourth, 1:09.93; and Whitney Wingard, fifth, 1:12.44, rounding out the top 5. Both Critz and Kelly will head into Marchand#8217;s final race tied, each with a first- and second-place finish. Huml is sitting in third overall with a pair of third-place finishes.

The Kinder Kup finale is scheduled for March 21.

Other Kinder Kup girlsand#8217; results from last Sunday were Jada Moore sixth, Mary Kathrin Davis seventh, Caroline Sandberg eighth, Anastasia Lubarsky ninth, Karli Anderson 10th, Jourdan Corker 11th, Macy Cannon 12th, Riley McHenry 13th, Emma Habaradas 14th, Cassandra Blevins 15th, Lilia Fields 16th, Krysta Budnik 17th, Gigi Blevins 18th, Anna Elias 19th, Sofia Delange 20th, Anna Wingard 21st and Allana Jones 22nd. Also competing were Annie Ferguson, Olivia Craig, Lauren Sandberg and Giulia Laucellotti.
