Incline basketball: Boys earn playoff date with top-seeded Lions

Staff report

Senior Matt Cromer and the Incline boys basketball team will enter the regional championship tournament in West Wendover as a No. 4 seed. The Highlanders will be tested in the semifinal round Friday against top-seeded Yerington.

The Incline boys don't have to wait long for a shot at redemption.

After losing 64-45 at Yerington in the final game of the regular season last week, the fourth-seeded Highlanders will face the top-seeded Lions again in the semifinal round of the Northern Division III regional championships Friday in West Wendover.

Getting past Yerington, which brings a perfect 12-0 league record into the four-team regional tournament, will be no simple task. But Incline (6-6) has as good a chance as anyone, as the Highlanders nearly upset the Lions in a 58-57 loss at home on Jan. 27.

Should the Highlanders pull off the upset Friday, they'll earn a berth in the state championship tournament and a chance to secure the North's top state seed in the regional final. The other semifinal matches up second-seeded Pershing County (9-3) with third-seeded Battle Mountain (7-5).

Yerington has multiple weapons to hold in check, including 6-foot-5-inch league MVP Sam Hammond, who tallied 22 points and 11 rebounds against Incline last week. Koby Foster added 12 points in that game, Dakota Aiazzi scored 10 and Daniel Sciarani had nine.

The Highlanders, whose stats were not available from the last game, will lean on their big three in the scoring department — senior guards Tanner Quenneville and Joey Stranzl and versatile junior guard Jon Cromer.
