Incline will begin league play with home games against Battle Mountain on Friday at 7 p.m. and Pershing County on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Incline boys soccer team will be battle tested when Division III play begins this week.

After competing against mostly large schools in the Howell Memorial Tournament to open the season, the Highlanders took on Division I-A powers Truckee and Sparks this past Wednesday and Saturday.

Incline (3-4) played well in both games but lost 3-1 and 1-0, respectively.

Against the Wolverines, Truckee junior Manny Sarabia put the hosts on the board with a header goal off of a corner kick in the 12th minute. Neither team scored again before the half as Truckee carried a 1-0 lead into the break.

The Highlanders evened the score seven minutes into the second half when junior Victor Herrera gathered a long through-ball from Danny Guerrero and beat three defenders before slotting a low shot past charging goalie Gabby Serna.

Truckee regained the lead in the 52nd minute on Sarabia’s second goal of the game. Truckee sophomore Joel Garcia extended the lead to the final margin with a goal assisted by Teliz Gonzalez in the 69th minute.

“I was happy with much of their play,” Incline coach Michael Coudriet said of his players. “They played hard and controlled a lot of the game. It was just two or three mistakes that led to goals. It was a close game. Truckee is a good team.”

Against Sparks, junior Genaro Vazquez scored the Railroaders’ one goal, assisted by freshman Rene Perez.

One noticeable sight on the Incline sideline is senior standout Rey Estrada, who is wearing a brace on his leg after undergoing surgery anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery, Coudriet said. The coach said he hopes to get Estrada back near the end of the season.
