Lakers girls chasing Lowry to state meet
October 29, 2006
RENO ” The North Tahoe High girls cross country team was in a familiar position Thursday at the Northern 3A Cross Country Championships ” that of chasing the Lowry Buckaroos.
With the NIAA State Championships coming up Saturday in Boulder City, however, coach Warren Mills isn’t conceding a thing.
“It isn’t over yet,” said Mills, who is in his 33rd season as North Tahoe’s cross country coach (and was at Truckee in 1973). “The girls have been solid, they’ve just been following Lowry everywhere. But we still have state to go, and that’s the one that matters.”
The Lakers finished second by a 31-50 score, making this the third straight year they’ve finished second to Lowry at the regional meet. Last year, Lowry won by three points. The Buckaroos have won six straight 3A state girls team titles.
Erin Altick ran 22:46 to place third and Carly McCready ran 23:42 to place eighth for the Lakers. It was another solid race for Altick, a senior who placed third at state each of the last two years and fourth as a freshman in 2003.
Dani Griffo finished 15th (24:27), Bridget Kimmey 19th (25:07) and freshman Maiya Greenwood 25th (25:31) to round out the team scoring. Julia Levy also ran 25:57 and senior Julianna Mills 29th (26:08).
