Large turnout highlights Donner Lake Turkey Trot

Despite the chilly weather this past Saturday, the annual Donner Lake Turkey Trot attracted more than 200 participants in support of the Auburn Ski Club Junior Nordic Program.
The roughly 7-mile run circles Donner Lake, starting and ending at West End Beach. The event also included the Mashed Potato Mile and Turkey Walk.
In a competitive race for the overall victory, 15-year-old Anthony Ocegueda of Sparks reeled in his competition on the final stretch along north side of Donner Lake to win with a time of 40 minutes, 48 seconds.
Luis Contreras of Reno was second in 41:10 and was followed by Wyatt Fereday and Dustin Deitch, both of Reno, with times of 41:43 and 42:04, respectively. Truckee's Spencer Eusden rounded out the top five in 43:56.
Far West Nordic Elite Team member Anja Gruber of Truckee was the top woman and 12th overall, posting a time of 46:02. Sabra Davison of Jericho was second among women and 15th overall in 47:41, and North Tahoe High senior Tara Gallant was the third woman in 48:49.
Truckee's Kari Hamby and Gretchen Brugman were fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 49:10 and 49:23.

Gallant wasn't the only North Tahoe High runner among the top finishers. Freshman JC Schoonmaker finished sixth in 44:52 and was followed by North Tahoe cross-country teammate Cam Goldstone in sixth (44:59).
They were trailed by Truckee's Gus Johnson (45:08) and 13-year-old Haydn Halvorsen (45:18), while Ross McMahon (45:49) of Incline Village rounded out the top 10. Peter Carol of the Sugar Bowl Academy was 11th (45:52), despite the extra drag from a large, pink squid hat that he sported.
Other top local finishers included Ian Smith of Truckee (17th), Brandon Herhusky of Carnelian Bay (24th), Jeff Schloss of Truckee (25th), MaryEllen Benier of Truckee (eighth woman), Maureen Sheehan of Truckee (ninth woman) and Sarah McMahon of Incline Village (52:32).
In the Mashed Potato Mile, Truckee 12-year-old Izzy Terrazas raced to victory with a time of 6:41 and was trailed by Carly Davis (6:46), Hana Mazur (6:48), Amelia Swanson (6:57) and Max "Flash" Gordon (7:24).
