Men’s fast pitch returns to Tahoe City
July 26, 2017
After a nearly 25-year hiatus, men's fast pitch softball is returning to the shores of Lake Tahoe.
"I think it has been 20 or 25 years," said Rod Collins former player-manager for the Tahoe City Blues and Markstein Beverage men's fast pitch teams from Tahoe City, which played in the late 1980s and early 1990s. "It will be good to have it back."
On the weekend of Aug. 5-6, Pete 'n Peters Sports & Spirits of Tahoe City is combining efforts with the Colfax Recreation Association to host a six-team men's tournament at Conners Field at Tahoe Lake School in Tahoe City.
The tournament, which is being played at the site of where the 1978 Amateur Softball Association Men's Class A National Tournament was contested, will pit teams from around Northern California and Reno, Nev.
Expected to enter the tournament are the River City Rockers from Sacramento, All-Star Automotive from Grass Valley, the Pirates from Reno, East Bay Bashers from Hayward, the Sonoma Outlaws from Santa Rosa and Pete 'n Peters, a local entry made up of former North Tahoe and Truckee high school baseball players.

"It should be a lot of fun," said Pete 'n Peters owner John Rutter. "People don't realize how big fast pitch was in the area way back when."
Two of the teams entered — All-Star Automotive and the Pirates — are headed to the North American Fast Pitch Softball Association's (NAFSA) national tournament later in August in North Dakota.
The Rockers, meanwhile, as the Roseville Eagles, captured the 2014 NAFSA A national title and are led by power-hitting, three-time All-American and NAFSA Hall of Fame inductee Mark Summers.
In connection with the tournament, an Old-Timers' golf round has been set up for Friday, Aug. 4, at Tahoe City Golf Course. Tee times for the nine-hole event will start at 1 p.m. In addition, an Old-Timers' mixer is slated for Saturday, Aug. 5, in the evening at Pete 'n Peters.
