North Tahoe baseball: Bats heating up near season’s end

TAHOE VISTA ” North Tahoe dropped a nonleague home game 14-5 to Portola on Wednesday.
Although the Lakers generated plenty of offense in the game, collecting 10 hits, they failed to capitalize on two bases-loaded situations ” scoring just one run with the bags full and no outs in the first inning, and not getting any runs with one out in the third.
“So we had our chances to take this game,” said North Tahoe head coach Chauncy Battaglia, who is encouraged nonetheless about his young team’s progress since the start of the season.
“The kids are swinging the bats well,” the coach said. “They’ve been hitting the ball well since the Incline series (on April 25). It’s just our defense. I keep stressing to them how important it is to play all seven innings and stay focused.”
Senior Chris Cahill started on the mound for the Lakers, allowing seven runs (five earned) while striking out one in 3 2/3 innings. Zach Tomlinson and Brendan Nelson pitched in relief, with Tomlinson giving up five runs (two earned) and striking out one in 2 1/3 innings, and Nelson giving up two runs while recording one strikeout in one inning of work.
Five Lakers had two hits apiece, with Brendan Nelson driving in two runs and Tomlinson picking up two extra-base hits with a double and triple. Cahill and Stefan Glander also hit doubles, and Brian Tidd went 2 for 2.

No Laker has swung a hotter bat than Tomlinson, whose 2-for-3 day increased his season average to .588 while beefing up his slugging percentage to .853 ” both team highs. He also leads the team with 20 hits and nine RBI. His numbers also lead the Northern 2A in many categories, according to MaxPreps.com.
“Zach has been a standout,” Battaglia said, adding that Tomlinson’s triple marked his third in the past two games. “He’s a hitting machine this year.”
Cahill ranks second on the Lakers in most offensive categories, including average (.368), slugging percentage (.447), and hits (14).
The Lakers host their final league doubleheader against Silver Stage on Saturday. Games are scheduled for noon and 2 p.m.
“We have Silver Stage this weekend, and we’re looking to get that monkey off our back and get in the win column,” Battaglia said.
