North Tahoe baseball: Lakers sweep league series against West Wendover

The North Tahoe baseball team upped its odds to earn the fourth playoff seed with a series sweep against West Wendover on Wednesday.

The Lakers won 6-4 and 8-5 and took third game by forfeit to improve to 5-10 in the Northern Division III.

That places North Tahoe fourth behind Yerington (16-0), Pershing County (14-2) and Battle Mountain (9-6) with one league series remaining — against Silver Stage this Friday and Saturday. The Lakers lead Incline (4-11), West Wendover (5-13) and Silver Stage (2-13) in the standings.

North Tahoe came from behind to earn a victory in the opening game of Wednesday's doubleheader, which was played at the midway point between both schools in Lovelock.

After falling behind 4-0 by the end of the fourth inning, the Lakers stormed back with a two-run fifth and four-run sixth to pull ahead for good.

Freshman Sam Sheridan drove in three runs on two hits, including a double, while freshman Joseph Lanza had a double and two RBIs and Trent Lingruen was 3-for-4 with two doubles. Koby Mattson contributed two hits, and Thomas Mercogliano, Drew Austin and Graham Payne had a hit apiece.

Payne started on the mound and went two innings before giving way to Lanza and then Austin, who did not allow a run in 1 2/3 innings.

In the nightcap, the Lakers led 3-1 after one inning before the Wolverines went in front 5-3 with a four-run fourth. North Tahoe responded with four runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to earn the win.

Lanza was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Payne had a hit and an RBI, Lingruen had two hits, and Mattson, Sheridan and Austin each had one hit. Lingruen, Mattson and Austin pitched, with Mattson and Austin combining to hold the Wolverines scoreless over the final 2 2/3 innings.
