North Tahoe basketball: Boys feeling sense of urgency entering final stretch

Staff report

North Tahoe's boys need to pick up some league wins if they intend to stay alive in the playoff race.

The Lakers fell to 2-6 in the Northern Division III after losing a pair of games on the road last week — 63-51 at Battle Mountain on Friday and 55-52 at West Wendover on Saturday.

North Tahoe, which has four DIII games remaining, has now lost four straight in league play to fall to sixth place. The top four teams advance to the regional championship tournament.

"My kids can play ball with anybody in this league, but if you don't make your free throws, you're not going to win games," said North Tahoe coach Frank Wright, lamenting Saturday's three-point loss at West Wendover.

Wright said victory was well within grasp against the Wolverines, but the Lakers gave up a late lead in part because of four missed free throws in the final 2 minutes. They were 8-of-17 from the charity stripe in the game.

"It was just a nightmare. We screwed up at the end," he said.
