North Tahoe basketball | Boys upset Mustangs on senior night

Staff report

The North Tahoe boys might be eliminated from postseason contention, but that doesn't mean they can't spoil someone else's chances.

The Lakers upset visiting Pershing County, 50-47, on Saturday, which placed the Mustangs in a tie with Silver Stage for the fourth and final playoff seed.

Pershing County and Silver Stage, both with 6-7 records in Northern Division III play, meet Friday to end the regular season. The winner advances to the regional postseason tournament.

The Lakers (3-10 league) were on their game Saturday while avenging a previous loss, 48-34, at Pershing County — which was fresh off a 58-48 win over second-place Incline (10-3 league) Friday night.

North Tahoe trailed 24-22 at the half but took over the lead with a 15-10 third quarter. The Mustangs pushed them to the final buzzer, however, and might have escaped with the win had it not been for a couple of clutch buckets late in the contest by Max Burkhardt and Trent Lingruen, who converted a slashing layup and a corner 3-pointer, respectively, to light up the home crowd on senior night.

"We cut our turnovers in half from previous games, and we really shut them down defensively," said North Tahoe coach Frank Wright. "We made it tough for them to get a shot. It was a great game for everyone."
