North Tahoe basketball | Girls earn No. 5 seed in Northern 2A postseason

The North Tahoe girls’ basketball team earned a No. 5 seed in the Northern 2A Regional Tournament and will face fourth-seeded Yerington in the first round Thursday at Wooster High School.
The winner will likely play top-seeded Pershing County, which is matched up in the first round against eighth-seeded West Wendover, in the second round Friday at Wooster.
The Lakers enter the postseason on the heels of a couple of tough home losses to end the regular season. They dropped their finale against Incline, 34-27, on Saturday and were edged by South Tahoe, 46-44, in an overtime heartbreaker Friday.
Against the Vikings on senior farewell, play remained even through one half, as South Tahoe led 8-7 after one quarter while the score was knotted at 18 at the midway point.
The third quarter doomed the Lakers, as the Vikings scored 12 points while holding the hosts to just two. North Tahoe stormed back with a strong comeback effort in the fourth, outscoring South Tahoe 20-10 to force overtime. The Vikings managed six points to the Lakers’ four in the five-minute overtime period to escape with the win.
North Tahoe posted a final regular-season record of 4-6 in Mount Rose League play and 8-13 overall. South Tahoe, which will enter the Northern 3A postseason as the No. 2 seed from the MRL, finished 7-3 in league and 10-13 overall. Incline finished 7-3 in league (11-15 overall) to earn the No. 2 seed in the Northern 2A Regional Tournament. The Highlanders face seventh-seeded Silver Stage in the first round Thursday.

North Tahoe’s boys ended the season with a 65-40 loss to South Tahoe on Friday and a 53-34 loss to league-leading Incline on Saturday.
The Lakers hung tough against the Highlanders, trailing only 24-14 at the half and 37-26 after three quarters. Senior forward Brendon Arnold led the Lakers with 12 points, while Raul Alonzo grabbed seven rebounds. Colin Spencer had three assists. Kyle Clouthier led Incline with 11 points.
North Tahoe played the Vikings tightly through the first quarter, posting 15 points to the visitors’ 20 before entering the break down 36-23. Sophomore point guard Alex Tyler and Arnold tallied eight points to lead the Lakers, while Mitchell Myers contributed seven points and Eduardo Rodriguez had five. Jacob Stowell posted a game-high 21 points.
The Lakers finished 4-20 overall and 0-10 in the Mount Rose League. South Tahoe, which did not qualify for the 3A postseason, ends the year 5-5 in league and 10-13 overall, while Incline earned the top 2A seed with a 9-1 league record (21-5 overall).
