North Tahoe basketball: Girls in fight for final playoff spot

The Laker girls lost 61-35 at first-place Pershing County this past Saturday.

North Tahoe held its own against the Mustangs’ second string to open the game, taking an early lead before Pershing County inserted its starting five to finish the first quarter up 20-12.

The Lakers scored 10 points to the Mustangs’ six in the fourth quarter to finish strong.

and#8220;I was very pleased with how we played,and#8221; said North Tahoe head coach Scott Conn. and#8220;We showed marked improvement over the first time we played them. They are truly the top team in our league, in our opinion. Incline is really close, but this year’s Pershing County team is the real deal.and#8221;

The Mustangs remain undefeated in league play, at 9-0, while improving to 25-1 overall. They edged Incline (6-3 league) in overtime, 62-59, on Friday.

Four North Tahoe players scored six points apiece to lead the Laker offense against Pershing County (also called Lovelock) and#8212; Monica Estrada, Tani Pettit, Samantha Jeffers and Heidi Schroepfer.

The Lakers have two league games remaining in the regular season, both against Whittell. Conn said if the Lakers defeat Whittell both games, they’ll play a tiebreaker against Silver Stage to decide the fourth and final Northern 2A playoff seed.

North Tahoe is attempting to reach the regionals for the third year in a row, which would mark the first time the Lakers have accomplished the feat, Conn said.

The Northern 2A regional tournament is scheduled for Feb. 19-20 at Wooster High School in Reno.

North Tahoe’s boys lost 57-44 at Pershing County on Saturday. Stats were not available from the game.

Senior post player Mitchell Conn was effective for the Lakers in the paint, as was Cody Lieberman in spurts despite aggressive defensive pressure by the Mustangs.

North Tahoe, which trailed 17-10 after one quarter and 31-21 at the half, pulled to within four points near the end of the third quarter before the home team pulled away down the stretch.
