The North Tahoe basketball teams split their home openers against Portola on Monday, with the girls winning 48-35 and the boys falling 74-59.

After an even first quarter that ended in a 9-9 tie, the Laker girls outscored the Tigers 14-8 in the second quarter to carry a 23-17 lead into the half. The Lakers extended their lead with a 9-8 third quarter and a 16-10 fourth quarter en route to the victory.

North Tahoe's guards led the way, as senior Mallory Tyler went off for 19 points and junior Jillian Argiris followed closely with 18. Zochitl Perez added six points, Cameryn Turner had three and Jordan Briggs two.

In the boys game, the Lakers got into foul trouble early and the Tigers took advantage, jumping out to a 25-13 first-quarter lead.

The Lakers battled back, outscoring the visitors 17-9 in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 34-30 by the half. But Portola steadily pulled away after the break as several North Tahoe players fouled out of the game.
