In what has become a common theme over the decades, the podiums at the regional cross-country championships were dominated by Laker blue this past Saturday.

North Tahoe’s boys and girls teams claimed their respective Northern Division III/IV regional titles while crowding the leaderboards with multiple top-10 finishes individually.

The North Tahoe boys — winners of an NIAA-record 18 state championships, including the last three — won with a low score of 31 points to runner-up Sierra Lutheran’s 70. Silver Stage was third with 78 points.

Taking advantage of their influx of young talent, the North Tahoe girls won with a low score of 24 points to second-place Sierra Lutheran’s 36 and third-place Wells’ 69. The Laker girls will seek back-to-back state titles — and their ninth total — at the state meet this weekend.

The girls’ youth movement was on full display Saturday.

While Silver Stage junior Elaina Marchegger won the individual regional title, covering the 5K course in 20:25, North Tahoe runners captured the next four spots. Three of those athletes are freshmen, including Sophia Sanchez, who placed second just three seconds behind Marchegger, in 20:28.

North Tahoe freshman Elan Lindsey finished third in 20:45, junior two-time defending state champion Quinn Lehmkuhl was fourth in 21:06 and freshman Ella Carr was fifth in 21:37.

Senior Sophia Tallarigo (23:21) rounded out the Lakers’ team score (top five) with a 12th-place finish and was followed by teammates Kaya Williams (23:50) in 13th and Xochitl Luna (24:06) in 15th.

The Meadows, which the Lakers edged by two points for the state title last year, easily won the Southern Div. III/IV regional title on Saturday, posting a score of 20 points to Agassi Prep’s 50.

North Tahoe’s boys, led by seniors Cam Goldstone in third place (18:16) and Julien Bordes in fifth (18:36), placed all five of their scorers among the top nine in a field of 60 runners.

Trailing the Lakers’ senior duo were sophomore JC Schoonmaker in sixth (18:41), senior Jackson Shaw in eighth (18:56) and senior Andrew Morgan in ninth (19:05). Alex Whitham finished 11th (19:25) and Tobin Johnson 16th (20:14).

Senior Trevor Martin of Silver Stage won the individual regional title with a time of 17:43, and Sierra Lutheran freshman Jared Marchegger was second in 17:54.

The Meadows also won the Southern boys regional title in a tightly packed top three. The Mustangs posted a score of 61 points, while West Wendover was second with 67 points and Laughlin third with 70.
