North Tahoe girls fall at Fernley

Staff reports

North Tahoe’s girls basketball team lost a Northern 3A league game, 58-51, at Fernley on Wednesday.

Lakers head coach Scott Conn said he was frustrated with his team’s play in the third quarter, as North Tahoe (1-3, 4-8) was outscored 22-10 after posting the first four points. The Lakers entered the half with a two-point lead.

“I thought we played them even in one quarter, outplayed them in two quarters and lost the one quarter,” Conn said. “We gave them too much of an advantage in the third.”

The Lakers also turned the ball over 21 times in the game, Conn said, with many of them coming in the third quarter. Most of the mistakes were “things that make a coach’s hair fall out,” Conn said.

“The turnovers came just on our regular offense. We were making bad decisions on when to pass. We simply weren’t protecting the ball like we need to,” he said.

The other major factor in the loss was the 20 missed free throws by the Lakers, who connected on only 19 of 39 from the line.

As a remedy, Conn said he had each player make 100 free throws before leaving practice on Thursday.

Despite the mistakes made by North Tahoe, Conn said Fernley did a good job of pulling ahead and holding on for the win.

“I’ve got to give Fernley credit. They hit shots when they needed to,” he said.

Senior Joelle Lazzareschi led the Lakers with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

“She had a whale of a game,” Conn said of his forward.

North Tahoe plays at Spring Creek today and Lowry on Saturday.
