North Tahoe’s girls basketball team took down Tahoe Basin rival Incline in a close-fought match on the road Friday, then lost to visiting Fernley the following day.

The Lakers defeated the Highlanders (1-11) 39-33 and lost by a count of 64-52 to the Vaqueros (7-4).

The split adjusted North Tahoe’s record to 3-9 in the Northern 3A and 7-13 overall.

Lakers head coach Scott Conn said his team is playing solid basketball, with good ball movement on the offensive end and effective defense.

Conn said that his team is lacking diversity on offense and that the girls are having trouble sinking outside field goals and 3-pointers.

“We are playing really good basketball, but we are a one-dimensional offense,” Conn said. “We have to be close up to score.”

Conn said that despite having six guards, all of whom perform well under pressure and sink outside shots in practice, none of them seem to get the ball to fall during games.

“That lets opponents play a very simple, compacted defense,” Conn said.

With outside shooting averages below 15 percent, North Tahoe relies on players like senior Joelle Lazzareschi, who continues to be solid inside the paint and was the high scorer Friday night with 15 points.

With everything being forced down the middle, where opponents sit in a zone and wait, North Tahoe has had problems with turnovers.

“Every coach knows that all they have to do to beat North Tahoe is pack the middle,” Conn said.

Conn said that those will be the things ” shooting under pressure from the outside and protecting the basketball ” that the Lakers will be working on in practice this week in preparation for rival Truckee on Wednesday. That game was originally scheduled for Friday, but was bumped up two days.
