After Day 1 of the two-day Division III state championship, the Lakers had all but secured the first golf title in school history.

The up-and-coming young squad built an insurmountable lead Tuesday and cruised to victory Wednesday, claiming the crown by a 15-stroke margin over second-place Incline.

"It's pretty exciting for us. It's the first in North Tahoe history for golf," said North Tahoe coach Steve Munro. "I'm very proud of the kids. They did a great job."

Playing at the challenging Mountain Falls Golf Club in Pahrump — a course with water hazards on 14 of 18 holes, Munro said — the Lakers jumped out to a 22-stroke first-day lead over The Meadows, with a team score of 422. North Tahoe posted a 451 on the second day, which gave them a winning score of 873.

Incline, which entered the tournament as the defending state champs, played consistently both days and finished in a tie with The Meadows, at 888. A tiebreaker based on each team's sixth player gave the Highlanders the second-place finish over the Mustangs. They were trailed by Lake Mead (899), Needles (903) and Whittell (929).

Individually, Incline senior Mitchell Cornell defended his state title from last year, firing a 69 and a 67 to edge Yerington's Griffin Cooper by a final score of 136 to 138. Kevin Inthachack of The Meadows was third at 149 (73, 76).

North Tahoe sophomore Quinn Earley led the Lakers with a seventh-place finish, carding a 74 and 85 for a final tally of 159. Teammate Murphy Scott finished one spot back with a 162 (81, 81), while Connor Hipsley placed 12th (86, 88 — 174), Isaac Mozen 15th (81, 98 — 179), Adrian Brambila 32nd (105, 99 — 204) and Jake Inclan 34th (100, 105 — 205).

Munro said his players were nervous at the start but quickly found their groove.

"Oh yeah, everybody was nervous. If you're not nervous, you're not human," he said. "But after they teed off and played the first hole, they all settled down and did a wonderful job. It was a tough course, but we were able to do it. I'm very proud of the kids."

North Tahoe also won the regional title last Thursday at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.
