North Tahoe golf: Lakers post solid results in 3A tourney

Sun Staff reports

EAGLE VALLEY GOLF COURSE ” The Lakers finished fourth overall in the 3A Yerington Tournament this past Friday despite competing without their fourth and fifth golfers.

Even more encouraging, said North Tahoe head coach Dick Tomlinson, were the finishes of Andrew Hill, who shot a 96, Eliot Headley (97) and Addison Granger (103), all of whom competed in their first 3A tournament.

Tomlinson said Northern Nevada players and coaches are beginning to take notice of North Tahoe for the first time in five years, as the Lakers have shown they can compete with the larger schools as a team made up of sophomores and only one junior.

Lowry took the top spot in the team competition, posing a score of 392. Spring Creek finished second with a score of 401 and was followed by Spring Creek at 421 and North Tahoe at 423. Dayton was fifth at 435, then Incline (437), Truckee’s junior varsity squad (460), Sparks (567), Fernley (504) and Hawthorne (no score).

Alec Griffith, the Lakers’ only upperclassman as a junior, shot a 74 to take fifth place individually. Craig Munro shot a 77 and Travis Boerner a 79 at Eagle Valley Golf Course.

“We head into the final four weeks before zones with a lot of confidence,” Tomlinson said. “We have five players voluntarily heading out to Rubyview Country Club in Elko for three practice rounds during their spring break this week.”

The North Tahoe players will practice at Rubyview to help prepare themselves for the 2A Regional Tournament, which will be held at the Elko course. The zone tourney is scheduled for May 13 and will determine which teams and individuals qualify for State.

“This is a terrific course above the town of Elko with perfect greens and nice vistas of the Ruby Mountains south of Spring Creek,” the coach said. “The more we see of this course the better.”

Tomlinson brought his team to compete in a 4A tournament there on March to begin preparing for zones.
