North Tahoe soccer, volleyball | Lakers bound for postseason play

Staff report

Julia Semmens and the North Tahoe girls soccer team will face off against rival Incline in the semifinal round of the Division III state championship tournament in Zephyr Cove on Friday.

The top soccer teams in the Northern Division III will clash for supremacy in the only postseason tournament they get this season.

The Northern regional tournament, scheduled or Friday and Saturday at Whittell High School, will double as the state championship tournament due to a lack of Southern programs in the Division III.

As usual, both North Tahoe teams are in the playoff mix.

The Laker boys (9-1-1), who finished runner-up in last year's state championship, enter as the No. 2 seed and will face third-seeded West Wendover (5-5) in the semifinal round Friday at noon. Two-time defending state champion Incline (9-0-1), the top seed, plays fourth-seeded Yerington (5-5) in the other semifinal at 4 p.m.

The winners meet for the regional and state championship Saturday at 2 p.m.

In the girls bracket, the third-seeded Lakers (9-4) play a semifinal against second-seeded Incline (12-2) on Friday at 2 p.m., while top-seeded Whittell (14-0) plays fourth-seeded White Pine (8-6) at 6 p.m. The Highlanders are seeking a third consecutive title.

The Lakers (5-7 league, 8-10-1) will face a stiff test in their semifinal match, as they face top-seeded juggernaut Yerington (12-0, 32-2) in the semifinal round at noon. Yerington won all but one set in its 12 league matches this season.

On the other side of the bracket, second-seeded Pershing County (9-3) plays third-seeded Incline (9-3) at 1:45 p.m.

The regional championship match takes place at 4 p.m., with both teams advancing to the state championship in Reno on Nov. 14-15.
