North Tahoe softball: Lakers sweep past Hawthorne

Sun Staff reports

The Lakers improved to 4-4 in Northern 2A league play after a doubleheader sweep at Mineral County (Hawthorne) this past weekend.

North Tahoe needed just five innings in both games to enforce the 10-run mercy rule, routing the Serpents 14-3 and 19-3 behind strong outings from senior pitchers Shea Mesa and Christina Lane.

Mesa threw all five innings of Game 1. She was on her game, not allowing a walk while striking out six hitters and giving up five hits.

The senior leadoff hitter also went 3 for 4 at the plate, while freshman Samantha Jeffers led the team with a 4-for-4 game with two doubles, a triple and five RBIs. Jeffers added a defensive highlight to her performance with a “great catch in right field,” said North Tahoe head coach Richard Mesa.

Shannon Stack and Mealani Mesa each were 2 for 4 ” Stack with a double and two RBIs and Mealani Mesa with three RBIs ” while Lane was 1 for 2 and chipped in three RBIs.

Lane pitched all five innings of Game 2, striking out nine and allowing two hits while walking seven. The senior co-captain helped her cause with the bat, going 3 for 4 with a double and six RBIs.
