North Tahoe track and field: Lakers wrap up regular season

The North Tahoe track and field team is primed for regionals after wrapping up the regular season at the Nevada Union Invitational in Grass Valley last Friday.

While senior distance specialist Cam Goldstone sat out the meet with a minor leg injury, senior thrower Jordan Briggs continued her dominant season with a pair of first-place finishes.

Briggs won the shot put with a personal-record (PR) throw of 36 feet, 10 inches, which was exactly three feet farther than second-place Michelle Flint of Pleasant Valley. Briggs also won the discus with a toss of 105-01, which also was three feet farther than Flint's second-place throw.

Sophomore Sofia Sanchez set PRs in both of her events, as she raced to a fourth-place finish in the 3,200 with a time of 12:01.92 and was ninth in the 1,600 in 5:37.07, while sophomore Brett Hurt also set PRs in each of his three events. He placed fourth in the triple jump (38-09), 19th in the long jump (17-10) and 36th in the 100 (12.93).

Freshman AJ Hurt placed third in the triple jump (33-08), 10th in the long jump (14-09) and 11th in the 100 hurdles (17.77).

Senior thrower Nick Joslin finished 16th in the shot put with a PR of 37-00, and placed 15th in the discus (116-10). Jacob Buhler was 27th in the shot put (34-07.75) and 34th in the discus (91-02), and Martin Barrera was 31st in the shot put (33-11) and 32nd in the discus (92-03).

For the North Tahoe girls, Allison Wright was 15th in the 100 (13.90) and 16th in the 200 (28.21), Valencia Covell was 19th in the 100 (14.24) and 29th in the 200 (30.60), and Maddie Cleeland was 23rd in the 100 hurdles (20.01). Bailey Shaw was 34th in the shot put (21-02.50) and 33rd in the discus (56-03).

The girls 4 x 100 relay squad of Cleeland, Hurt, Covell and Wright recorded a sixth-place finish with a time of 54.73.

On the boys side, senior Max Burkhart was 18th in the 200 (24.67), 12th in the 400 (54.00) and 22nd in the long jump (17-06.50).

Warren Fekeith raced the 100 (13.29) and the 200 (27.20), Freddy Leon raced the 100 (14.88) and 400 (69.62), Kobi Hudson raced the 800 (2:33.69), and Alex Whitham raced the 3,200 (11:38.59). Ryan Heisinger (5:13.72), Tobin Johnson (5:16.14) and Jackson Shaw (5:17.40) ran and finished together in the 1,600.

Postseason

North Tahoe will compete in the Northern Division III regional championships at Yerington High School this Friday, May 13. The state championship will be held at Carson High School the following week, May 20-21.
