Notes from his first World Cup
December 9, 2008
Editors note: The following story was written by 10-year-old Robert Foster, who attended the Birds of Prey World Cup skiing event at Beaver Creek, Colo, from Dec. 4-6.I am from Truckee, California, and last week I went to the Birds of Prey World Cup in Vail, Colorado with my father Jeff Foster. Our Sierra Sun press passes made it possible to get closer to the skiers and get some good pictures, which I am sending with my story. The first day we arrived at the course was Friday. We were supposed to arrive Thursday but our flight was delayed due to weather. That same storm dumped 4 feet of snow on the course causing the cancellation of the Combi. On Friday I saw the Downhill and a couple of disasters. Bode Miller crashed and Marco Sullivan (a Truckee local) skied off course.Marco Sullivan made no excuses. He said, The course is great. We havent had this kind of weather for three years on this course. The snow was great. The weather was great. I just messed up. Its a bummer. It sucks.Fridays winner in the Downhill was Aksel Lund Svindal from Norway. Saturday was the super G. Svindal won again, Ted Ligety (the American) finished seventh and Bode Miller finished 16th. Marco finished 22nd and TJ Lanning finished 26th.I met Marco Sullivan and he seems like a nice guy. He had a large fan club from Truckee there with him at the event. I had my picture taken with him and Nate Holland and also with the Austrian team. The skiing at Beaver Creek was fun. It was steeper than Northstar, but Squaw is way steeper than Beaver Creek. The mountain, however, was bigger than Squaw. One plus about skiing at a World Cup event is that we were able to ski as fast as we wanted without bringing attention to ourselves. No one yelled at me to Slow down like they do in Truckee. The only time I saw the ski patrol (who were on snowboards) yell to slow down was once at a guy from the Austrian ski team. All in all, it was a great event and I hope to go back next year and participate when I get older.
