Prep roundup Jan. 16: Truckee boys fall in close game

The Truckee boys' basketball team went on the road for a league contest against Fernley on Saturday, Jan. 13, and suffered a 51-48 loss.

The Wolverines (5-9, 2-6 Northern League) and the Vaqueros (11-7, 6-2 Northern League) engaged in a tightly contested game, but in the end, Fernley survived a 17-point fourth quarter from Truckee to claim their fourth straight victory.

The defeat drops Truckee to 1-6 over the team's last seven league games. Sophomore Isaac Cruz led the Wolverines offense with 14 points on 5 of 17 shooting. Senior Gabriel Cruz was next with 13 points on 5 of 10 from the field. Junior Spencer Edmondson led Truckee with seven rebounds and three steals.

The Wolverines should get back in the win column when they head to Sparks (0-17, 0-8 Northern League) on Tuesday, Jan. 16 (results not available at time of press).

The Wolverines will then return home for a game on Friday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m. against rivals South Tahoe.

Truckee girls

The Truckee girls' team didn't fare much better in Fernley on Saturday, Jan. 13, dropping a 57-46 game to the Lady Vaqueros.

The Wolverines (8-8, 3-5 Northern League) started slowly against Fernley (12-7, 7-1 Northern League), trailing 28-15 at halftime, and then 40-21 going into the fourth quarter.

The girls would fight back with a 25-point fourth quarter, but the deficit proved to be to great, sending Truckee to their third loss in four games.

Junior Ava Seelenfreund led the Wolverines with 15 points on 6 of 18 shooting, and dished out a team-high four assists. Freshman Emma Cooley added 12 points and three steals for Truckee, followed by freshman Annika Thayer with seven points and team highs with 11 rebounds (five offensive) and four blocks.

Truckee then traveled to Sparks (3-7, 2-6 Northern League) for a game on Tuesday, Jan. 16 (results not available at time of press).

The girls are then scheduled to face South Tahoe at home on Friday, Jan. 19 at 6 p.m.

North Tahoe Boys

The young Lakers team continued to gain experience at the Class 2A level, and had a strong showing against Northern League rival White Pine with a 61-51 win at home on Saturday, Jan. 13.

North Tahoe (5-10, 2-3 Northern League) has rotated wins and losses during the team's past four league games, but played perhaps their best ball of the season in Saturday's win over White Pine (5-11, 1-6 Northern League).

The Lakers will continue their home stand on Friday, Jan. 19, with a game against Pershing County (14-3, 4-1 Northern League) at 7:30 p.m.

North Tahoe Girls

The North Tahoe girls had a tough outing against White Pine on Saturday, Jan. 13, suffering a 46-10 defeat.

The girls sit at 0-4 in Class 2A Northern League play, and are next scheduled to face Pershing County (13-5, 3-2 Northern League) at home on Friday, Jan. 19, at 6 p.m.
