Prep Roundup: Lady Wolverines basketball clips Hawks

The Class 3A Truckee girls’ basketball team avenged an early season loss to Class 4A Hug on Tuesday, Dec. 19, in a 44-36 victory at home over the Hawks.

The Wolverines had previously lost to Hug 51-47 on Dec. 8 at a tournament in Reno, but turned the tables behind 28 combined points from senior Isabella Abarno and freshman Emma Cooley.

Truckee (4-5, 2-2 Northern League) didn’t shoot the ball particularly well on the night, hitting 22 percent of their shots from the field, but 19 offensive rebounds and 22 steals helped the Wolverines hold off the Hawks.

Abarno led the team on the glass with eight rebounds (five offensive), and dished out a team-high four assists. Defensively, freshman Lauren Tanner recorded nine steals on the night to go with seven points, followed by junior Tommie Jepsen with five steals.

The Wolverines are playing at the Vacaville Christian Tournament, and tipped off against Turlock Christian on Thursday, Dec. 21 (results not available at time of press). Truckee will play tournament games on Friday and Saturday as well.

The Wolverines will return to league play on Jan. 5 with a contest at Spring Creek.

Alpine skiing

The second race of the high school Alpine season has been canceled, according to a statement from Tahoe Basin League Director Bill Cottrill, due to snow showers and 45-55 mph winds with gusts of 85 mph at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.

Potential challenges in traveling to and from the event factored into the decision, according to the statement, along with the risk of lift closures at the resort.

Many of Mammoth’s lifts have been on a weather hold throughout the day, according to information from the resort.

The giant slalom race was scheduled to take place on Wednesday, Dec. 20, and would have featured local squads Truckee, North Tahoe, and Incline.

The North Tahoe boys and Truckee girls won the season’s first race at Alpine Meadows.

Wrestling

The Truckee wrestling team is scheduled to host a meet Friday, Dec. 22, from 9 a.m. until roughly 2 p.m.

The Mountain Man Junior Varsity Classic will serve as the squad’s home opener after a meet earlier in the year fell through for the team.

The Wolverines are expected to wrestle against Coral Academy of Science – Reno, Carson, Reno, Reed, Galena North Valleys, Manogue, and McQueen at the meet.
